"Artist Jo Myeong-hee's studio, Red & Flower"

    Very Berry Winter
North of Seoul, Pyeongchang-dong is exceptionally crowded with artists. The gallery becomes their haven, and artists prepare ateliers in the neighborhood and immerse themselves in the work. As surrounded by mountains and valleys, they can spend a whole day with nature when they want. Areas like this are rare in Seoul.
Artist Jo Myung-hee also settled here. she lives and works in Pyeongchang-dong.
An old white building, the short wooden stairs going up to the second tell floor the traces of the years.
The shape of red cockscombs was welcomed as soon as the door was opened. It was all rouge, but there were various colors in it.
Recently, thanks to the transfer of more than 300 works to the gallery storage, her studio looked much more refreshed. Her passion for drawing about 10 pieces of work per month gave her a good idea of her state of mind. She said she was happy to paint.
“I prefer lines that flow naturally from the brush. I believe that line means freedom. Also, I try to work while praying that the results I want to express are always true.”
How was your effort to become a painter?
After I made up my mind to become a painter, I was very active getting in everything. When it came to painting, I continued to look and watch without missing art books or exhibitions. I didn’t let go of my brush even when I had to take care of my husband's health.
If it's not a special occasion, I draw every day as a habit. It's been over 30 years since I started painting in earnest, but I think it's been about 15 years since I feel comfortable grabbing my brush. In the meantime, my painting style also changed slightly.

I saw an article somewhere that focused on ‘depth of color’. I sympathized with the saying, ‘color is the subject’.
Color is the key factor for any painter. The story of color is not simple.
Rather than painting a rose, I want to bring out the deep colors within the rose to convey its true meaning of the rose. For that, it takes a very long time to create colors. Basically, I mix, experiment, and observe until I get the color I want. But again, color isn't everything, so I think the unique development and finish are important as well.

What do you like to do besides painting?
I like to decorate, so I have a lot of interest in interior design. I once used to want to be a party planner. I feel good when I create a party atmosphere by using colors, flowers, and props that fit the theme. Other than that, as long as there is wine, flowers, and great music in the studio, there is nothing more to ask for.

What do you do when the work is not going well or doesn't come out on your way?
When that happens, I do very detailed and precise drawings. It doesn't require thinking or worrying, it's just a matter of slowly drawing the object. When time goes by like that, I think I feel better to some extent.

As an artist, what do you think is most important?
The most important thing in my life is 'family'. Painting is not a priority over family. However, the most important thing as an artist is ‘myself’. Personally, I hope that my life is the result of living a truthful and sincere life. If it is, that returns to work that I want or can acknowledge. I really want that the picture I put out all my heart and sincerity can comfort and make someone happy.

Where do you get ideas from and what makes you drive?
All creators have the pain of creativity. Some can get it from listening to music or reading books, but I tend to read a lot of fashion magazines. Honestly, isn't the creative power of fashion designers amazing? I am stunned by how they can use those patterns and colors. Sometimes, the various colors of the clothes are the same, but they look different.
Your work is intuitive and close to abstraction. Please tell us about your style.
I can't do anything if I'm not excited. May I call it ‘expressionism that spontaneously expresses lots of emotions that flare up at some point? I can say that I work on semi-abstracts. Anyone can recognize it if they look closely, but if you look at it from a distance, you could be confused about what this painting is.

Your paintings with flowers are so pretty. Are you particularly fond of them?
Flowers are the most beautiful thing in the world, aren't they? Falling in love with beauty is a natural human nature. I like flowers, too. As an artist, I want to convey the feeling of color that beautiful flowers have, in-depth.

I wonder what themes are you focusing on these days.
I've been drawing variously for a while now because I want to be immersed in abstract work. Like Mark Rothko, I like the abstraction of the color field, and I am interested in works expressed in lines like Georg Baselitz’s. So, the concept I choose is ‘door’. I am drawing abstract paintings with various themes with doors. The door signifies the boundary between happiness and sorrow, inside and outside. It might be a kind of expression of the heart that wants to look at the truth with objective eyes.
This is the first exhibition at JW Gallery. How do you feel?
I feel that I have a very good relationship with JW. Perhaps that is why I am very much looking forward to the first exhibition held here. It feels good to be able to do such a rewarding job before the year ends.

What do you expect from this exhibition?
There is nothing to expect, and the exhibition itself is something to be thankful for. It's not often to get a chance to show people what I've drawn. As an artist, I just want to have it as an opportunity to humbly reflect and take a leap.

What would you like to say to the audience?
I am not interested in anything other than painting. Only pictures fill most of my life. I have been drawing the pictures I love so much for a long time, and the works I have worked on will be presented in this exhibition. I hope my mind will reach people who swing by, and I hope you will be happy, healthy, and love your life above all in the new year 2023.
